What are Clinical Trials? |
| A clinical trial tests the safety and effectiveness of a medication, medical treatment or device on a group of volunteers. Clinical trials (or studies) are an important step in making new medications available. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must authorize a drug company to conduct a clinical study. The FDA requires drug companies to supply information about the selected Physicians participating so that these Investigators meet the FDA guidelines for conducting studies. |
Should I Volunteer? |
| Patients with the condition being studied (such as asthmatics or patients with osteoarthritis) as well as healthy people can volunteer to participate on a study. Each study has specific requirements such as age, sex or medical condition for volunteers. Each patients medical history is reviewed to see if the study requirements are met for participation.
Prior to participating on a study, you will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form (ICF). The consent form will give the volunteer the information that they need to decide about participating in a study. Known risks will be explained by the study physician prior to participating in a study. The ICF will provide you with information about the medication and all procedures to be followed. The volunteer has the right to ask any questions to the Investigator about the study.
